Lavender

This is the most popular oil to use for any type of pain relief. Generally used for stress and tension relief, it is also used to treat pain such as sore muscles, joint pain, and sprains. One study found that when Lavender essential oil is used for back pain relief it reduces pain by 39 percent. Lavender essential oil is very versatile, it can also be used to treat skin and increase blood circulation.

Thyme

A great choice to use for recovering from exercising or sports injuries, thyme specifically treats joint and muscle pain. Thyme would work great for any back pain or injuries resulting from physical activity. Research has also found that thyme is actually more effective than ibuprofen, a drug most commonly used for arthritis, fever, and any severe pain. Any criticism of an essential oil such as thyme being non-effective is void. Thyme has been used in traditional medicine for centuries.

Ginger

Ginger is another essential oil that has been used for over thousands of years. It can be drank as tea, mixed into vegetable juice, or eaten fresh or dried. It also is used to help relieve aches and improve blood circulation. Using ginger as a massage oil will help relieve backache, arthritis and muscle pain.

Wintergreen

Extracted from leaves of an evergreen plant, wintergreen can be used in foods, teas, and various other products. Centuries ago, North American tribes used wintergreen essential oil to cure fatigue and respiratory illnesses. Considered one of the best inflammation-fighting sources in the world, it can also treat back pain, swelling, irritation, and cold or fever.

Peppermint

Not the candy, but actually a natural hybrid oil made of spearmint and watermint. Used commonly for nausea, indigestion, and stomach pain, peppermint is also a great muscle reliever for any lower back pain. There are actually similar products out there such as Ben Gay and Icy Hot, but the cons of using these products are they include other non-natural ingredients and they smell awful.

    I am an avid user of essential oils, and I agree that the above oils really do work! I suffer with both neck and back pain, and the five you mentioned are real life-savers for me. They keep me off the harsh drugs that so many traditional doctors are quick to prescribe.
