Bulging and Herniated discs
The vertebral discs are made of a tough outer layer and soft inner gelatin-like center. When a disc is herniated, there is actually a crack in the outer layer that allows the softer inner core to protrude out. A bulging disc differs in that there is no leaking of the inner core. In this case, the outer layer is intact but bulging out in a place where the outer wall has weakened. Where they are the same is the excruciating pain caused by both instances.

Within recent years, the medical community has come to a shocking conclusion about the nature of pain. It used to be believed that pain was only a received sensation, e.g. the prick of a needle hurts due to the actual puncture of the skin. Today, it is understood that pain is actually a sensation given by the mind and body to prevent further damage from occurring. When a needle is inserted, it sends signals to the brain which translates those signals into what we know as pain, a message to our conscious to stop whatever it is we are doing.

This knowledge plays an immense role in how doctors go about remedying that pain. For instance, chiropractors understand that this pain response as well as other muscular responses, while designed to protect the body, can actually sometimes limit its healing process. For this reason the pain and muscular damage must be relieved to aid in proper healing. A lot of chronic pain is the result of chronic inflammation, and the evidence is quite strong that diet can contribute to increased systemic inflammation. But your diet is also one of the best ways to reduce it.

One of the most common areas of pain is lower back pain. Treatment can range from medications to injections to surgery.

The problem with these treatments is that they are not always effective and have the burden of side effects. For example, opioids, which are prescribed for lower back pain, are now causing an epidemic in overuse and overdose.

When it comes to musculoskeletal issues such as neck pain, back pain and sciatica, people will either visit their doctor or opt for a chiropractor. Since chiropractic care is considered a holistic approach to pain, people will often consider a doctor first. Although seeing a doctor for musculoskeletal pain seems to be the more reassuring thing to do, a study has proven otherwise and instead recommends seeking chiropractic care first.

Neck adjustments are a chiropractic treatment used to provide pain relief associated with the neck. It involves a hands-on physical manipulation of the neck performed by a chiropractor who has spent thousands of hours learning the method and the human vertebrae to execute it safely. Although the thought of getting your neck adjusted can seem terrifying, the risks of something going wrong are rare and the benefits are significant.

When it comes to back problems, there seem to be a ton of options. From acupuncture to relief patches at your local pharmacy, it can be hard to determine what really can help you with pain relief. Chiropractic care and osteopathic manipulative treatment are actually both great options for back pain. They are also both great alternatives to surgery, which does carry a small risk and requires downtime after the procedure.
