Chiropractic care isn’t just an effective treatment for back and neck pain. It can also be great for a wide range of disorders and conditions you probably didn’t know about. Chiropractic care’s focus on the musculoskeletal system and nervous system may be able to make it an effective treatment for seizures and/or epilepsy.
What’s a seizure?
A seizure occurs when there is an uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. Changes in behavior, movements or feelings and levels of consciousness are some of the key symptoms of a seizure. Experiencing recurring seizures means you have epilepsy.
How can chiropractic care treat seizures?
Seizures are the result of neurological disorders. The ability of chiropractic care to possibly be able to benefit the brain make it a viable treatment.
The vagus nerve is the nerve between the spine and the bottom of the skull and connects the spine to the brain. Chiropractic adjustments help stimulate and improve function and regulation of the nerve, allowing the body to learn how to stimulate and control the vagus nerve on its own, which can possibly be significant in the effect chiropractic has on people experiencing seizures and/or epilepsy.
A study published in Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics took a close look at 17 children with epilepsy and seizures who 14 of were treated with medication and saw no results. After receiving chiropractic care in the neck, nearly 90% of the children saw a significant reduction in both the intensity and frequency of seizures.
Another study on a 25 year old women with a history of epilepsy found that chiropractic care manipulation improved her seizure episodes and menstrual cycles following 12 weeks of care. This demonstrates that chiropractic care may be effective for those with seizure disorders, although more definitive research is definitely necessary.
