Muscle knots are not literally knots made out of muscle but instead are when many muscle fibers stick to each other, limiting mobility and flexibility. Muscle knots can be caused by poor posture or injuries. Not treating or doing preventative maintenance on those knots can be quite harmful which is why chiropractic care can help.
A chiropractor can treat a knot muscle in a couple of ways, such as the following:
Massage – a good session of massage therapy can break down the knot and eliminate tension.
Active release technique – chiropractors are very skilled in using the active release technique which is a deep tissue massage that breaks up adhesion’s in the affected area.
There are also a few ways you can help treat it on your own, like taking a hot shower, going to heat therapy, or adding stretching or yoga to your daily routine. If the muscle knot is giving you pain symptoms you can use a heating pad or cooling spray. It’s important not to put ice or hot packs on the actual skin of the knot.
The most important step to treating a muscle knot is rest. If the muscle knot was caused by exercise or poor posture while sitting, than you should stay away from those activities for a few days, even if it takes asking for days off work.
To prevent muscle knots from happening in the future make sure to drink lots of water, eat healthy and avoid alcohol and sugary stuff. Also make sure to exercise and take breaks from sitting too much. Most importantly try to relax and breathe.
