Magnesium for Pain Relief: What you should know

January 1, 2021

Magnesium is a vital mineral for your physical and mental health. About 60% of the magnesium in your body is found in bone, while the rest is in muscles, soft tissues and fluids, including blood. It keeps blood pressure under control, keeps bones strong, boosts the immune system, and acts as a hormone regulator. Aside from these benefits, magnesium is extremely helpful in pain management.

Do you often experience muscle spasms, restlessness, and numbness in your limbs? Then, it is possible that you may have a magnesium deficiency. While it is always best to consult with a physician to determine your needs, the recommended daily intake is typically 400–420 mg per day for men and 310–320 mg per day for women.

Unfortunately, many people do not get the required amounts needed and as such, there are many high-quality supplements available one can take. However, the healthiest and easiest way to meet your daily needs is by eating foods high in magnesium. As it is natural, it is absorbed by the body a lot easier in any of the following foods.

Magnesium-Rich Foods

  • Avocados
  • Almonds and cashews
  • Dark chocolate
  • Flax seeds
  • Whole grains
  • Bananas
  • Halibut and Mackerel

Getting enough magnesium is essential for maintaining good health. Without enough of this important mineral, your body can’t function optimally.  This mineral deficiency can lead to a variety of health problems, such as weak bones, fatigue, or a decreased immune system. Here are a few medical conditions in which magnesium can also prove beneficial:

Migraine attacks lead to severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting. If you frequently face this problem, then it may be an indication of magnesium deficiency. Taking magnesium-rich foods can reduce acute migraine attacks, improve your health, and prevent migraines in the long run.

Muscular Pain
Muscle cramps and back pain make your life difficult. Sore muscles make it a challenge to perform routine tasks and add to the stress. Furthermore, constant muscle pain also affects the quality of sleep and may cause depression and anxiety. Magnesium mineral is good for muscular health. It relieves pain and strengthens muscles to reduce the risk of cramps and other related health issues.

Nerve Pain
Nerve damage causes the nervous system to transmit false pain signals. As a result, you may feel tingling or burning sensations and sharp pain. Magnesium can effectively regulate the nervous system and provide relief from nerve pain.

Chronic Pain
People tend to suffer from chronic pain when they have been in an accident or are suffering from chronic diseases. With the right magnesium dosage, chronic pain can be effectively reduced and treated in many cases. Furthermore, it also works well for managing inflammatory conditions.

Magnesium is essential for several of the body’s biological processes.  Proper muscle and nerve function, brain function, energy metabolism, and protein production are all controlled by magnesium. Deficiency can also cause a number of issues including pain or tingling in arms or legs, muscle tremors or cramps, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat. Although deficiency is uncommon in healthy people, proper levels can easily be maintained by eating magnesium-rich foods or taking a supplement.
