Most people visit their chiropractor for back pain as it seems to be the most helpful for those with back issues. However, a lot of people also go to their chiropractor for headaches.
Headaches are an extremely common ailment and there are many types of headaches, as there are causes themselves. Chiropractic care can help alleviate headaches as well as back pain and leg pain.
Your chiropractor will ask for your medical history and give you a full examination in order to determine what triggers your headaches. They will then perform a musculoskeletal exam to help identify those areas of the body which could be causing your headache. Headaches can result from physical or mental stress, sinus issues, and other issues such as TMJ.
Methods of Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches
The first course of treatment your chiropractor may try is a standard chiropractic adjustment, which will help restore the range of motion in the neck and/or spine. Chiropractic adjustments are an extremely effective way to quickly reduce pain while improving range of motion
There are several reflex techniques that your doctor can use to help relieve headaches. These include treatments for sinus pressure as well as heat or ice treatments to help with muscular tension headaches. As well, many chiropractors will use electric muscle stimulators to help boost the strength of the treatment. With a muscular tension headache, the areas at the base of the spine where the cranium and neck meet are tense and the aforementioned methods can relieve the pain of this type of headache without any major adjustments.
Other Minor Ways to Treat Headaches
As well, there are other gentle methods to help ease headache pain that your chiropractor may employ. These include gentle pressure, stretching motions and gentle rocking motions to help restore normal spinal function, provide muscle relaxation and increase range of motion.
After your treatment, your chiropractor may give you suggestions for continued care at home. This can include changes to your diet to make sure you are getting enough nutrition, staying hydrated not skipping meals. They may even recommend vitamin and/or mineral supplements to improve your overall health.
In some cases, your chiropractor may show you specific postural positions that can help reduce, improve or completely eliminate your headaches. These may include sleeping positions, how to sit properly at work, stretches and what type of pillow you should use.
