$39 New Patient Special — consultation, exam & X-rays if needed. Call (805) 496-4469

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions I actually get asked — at the front desk, on the phone, and increasingly through the AI assistants people use to find a chiropractor. I’ve answered them the way I’d answer you in the room: straight, specific, and without the marketing gloss.

Dr. Nick Brock, DC is a CBP-trained structural chiropractor at 1625 E Thousand Oaks Blvd, Suite E, in Thousand Oaks, serving Westlake Village, Newbury Park, Oak Park, and Agoura Hills. If your question isn’t here, call (805) 496-4469 or send a message and I’ll answer it personally.

What should I expect on my first visit to a Thousand Oaks chiropractor?

Short answer: about an hour with me — a one-on-one consultation, a full chiropractic and orthopedic exam, digital posture analysis, X-rays if they’re warranted, and a written care plan. Longer answer: this isn’t a quick crack and a rebook. The first visit exists so we both get the facts about how your spine is built and what’s driving your symptoms, then decide together whether we can help. Most new patients start with the $39 New Patient Special — a $140 value — and you can schedule your first visit online.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

Short answer: sometimes — it depends on the day. Longer answer: we keep the schedule deliberately light so each patient gets real time, which means new-patient spots fill quickly. We’re open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 8:00–5:30 and Tuesday 2:00–5:30, and closed Friday through Sunday. The fastest way to find out what’s open today is to call (805) 496-4469.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

Short answer: no. Longer answer: in California you can see a chiropractor directly — no doctor’s referral required. Just book a first visit and we’ll start with the exam. If your situation needs imaging or care beyond my scope, we’ll refer you out; that’s part of doing this honestly.

How long is a typical appointment?

Short answer: the first visit runs about an hour; regular adjustment visits are shorter. Longer answer: I run a lower-volume practice on purpose — longer visits, fewer patients per day, and real time spent on diagnostics and progress reviews instead of five-minute crack-and-go sessions. Your corrective visits include the adjustment plus any traction or rehab in your plan, so the time varies with what we’re working on.

Where is your office and what are your hours?

Short answer: 1625 E Thousand Oaks Blvd, Suite E, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 — open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 8:00–5:30, Tuesday 2:00–5:30, and closed Friday through Sunday. Longer answer: we serve the wider Conejo Valley, including Westlake Village, Newbury Park, Oak Park, and Agoura Hills. Full directions and a map are on the contact page, or call (805) 496-4469.

How much does a chiropractor cost in Thousand Oaks without insurance?

Short answer: your first comprehensive visit here is $39 with the New Patient Special — a $140 value covering the consultation, exam, digital posture analysis, X-rays if indicated, and a written care plan. Longer answer: ongoing care depends entirely on what we find, and we give you the full cost in writing at your report of findings, before any treatment begins. No surprise bills and no signing up for a year of visits sight-unseen. The $39 special doesn’t apply to auto-accident or personal-injury cases, which bill through insurance or your attorney.

Do you take my insurance?

Short answer: we bill most insurance plans, and we’ll check yours for free before you commit to anything. Longer answer: chiropractic coverage varies a great deal from one plan to the next, so a blanket yes or no would not be much use to you. We look up your specific plan, tell you what it pays toward care here and what your share would be, and you decide from there with real numbers. Billing is handled out of network, which is part of what we go over on that call. For most new patients the $39 New Patient Special is the simplest, lowest-risk way to start regardless of coverage. Auto-accident and personal-injury care is handled separately through your insurer or attorney — see auto accident & whiplash.

Do you offer payment plans for chiropractic care?

Short answer: yes, for longer corrective care plans. Longer answer: structural correction with Chiropractic BioPhysics is a defined course of care with a measurable end point, not an open-ended subscription. Once we know what your plan involves, I’ll lay out the total cost and the payment options in writing so there are no surprises. Ask at your report of findings.

Is the $39 first visit a real exam or just a teaser?

Short answer: it’s the real evaluation. Longer answer: you sit down with me — not an assistant — for a full history, a chiropractic and orthopedic exam, digital posture analysis, and X-rays if they’ll change your plan. You leave with a written report telling you whether we can help, how long it should take, and what it costs. That’s the same work-up I’d do for any new patient. Full details are on the New Patient Special page.

Do I have to commit to a long treatment plan?

Short answer: no. Longer answer: the first visit exists so we both get the facts. If structural chiropractic is the right call, we’ll give you a clear plan with a measurable end — I’d genuinely rather you graduate from care than stay forever. If it isn’t the right call, we’ll tell you that and point you toward the care that is.

What is the difference between standard chiropractic and Chiropractic BioPhysics?

Short answer: standard chiropractic mostly relieves symptoms by adjusting joints; Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) measures and works to correct the spine’s underlying structure and alignment. Longer answer: most chiropractors pop your back, ease the immediate pain, and rebook you — that helps short-term but doesn’t change why the pain keeps returning. CBP is the most peer-reviewed technique in chiropractic and treats your spine as a structural unit, using digital posture analysis, mirror-image traction, and Denneroll spine-remodeling to remodel curves over time. I’m CBP Trained. There’s a full explanation on the Chiropractic BioPhysics page.

What is Chiropractic BioPhysics and is it backed by research?

Short answer: CBP is a structural-correction technique, and yes — it’s the most published, most peer-reviewed approach in chiropractic. Longer answer: rather than guessing, CBP measures your posture and spinal curves objectively, sets a target alignment, and uses specific adjustments, mirror-image traction, and Denneroll spine-remodeling to work toward it. We re-measure as you progress so you can see whether it’s actually working. Read more on the CBP page.

Do I need X-rays, and are they always required?

Short answer: not always — only when they’ll change your plan. Longer answer: structural correction depends on knowing the actual curve and load of your spine, and X-rays are how we measure that objectively, including with PostureRay analysis. But we don’t take them routinely. If imaging won’t change what we recommend, we skip it. If you have recent films from another provider, bring them.

How long until I feel better with chiropractic care?

Short answer: many patients feel relief within the first few weeks, but lasting structural change takes longer. Longer answer: easing pain and correcting the structure driving it are two different timelines. Symptom relief often comes early; remodeling a spinal curve is a measurable process that plays out over a defined course of care. At your report of findings we’ll give you an honest, written estimate based on your exam — not a one-size-fits-all promise.

Will I have to keep coming back forever?

Short answer: no — my plans have a defined end point. Longer answer: we don’t sell open-ended wellness packages, and I’d rather you graduate from care than stay on the schedule indefinitely. Once we reach your goals, we talk about what, if anything, you need to maintain them. Some people choose periodic check-ins; that’s a choice, not a requirement.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Short answer: for most people, no — it’s quick and often a relief. Longer answer: a specific adjustment is a fast, low-force movement, and the popping sound is just gas releasing from the joint, not bones grinding. If you’re sore, anxious, or have a condition that calls for a gentler approach, I have low-force and instrument options. I’ll always match the technique to your body and tell you what to expect before we do it.

Can a chiropractor help with my back pain?

Short answer: yes — back pain is one of the most common reasons people see me, and it’s squarely within what chiropractic addresses. Longer answer: rather than just chasing the ache, we measure what’s driving it — how your spine is built and how it loads — and build a plan to correct the structure where that’s the cause. See the back pain page for how I approach it.

Can a chiropractor fix text neck and forward head posture?

Short answer: in many cases the forward-head posture behind “text neck” can be measurably improved. Longer answer: years of looking down at phones and screens loads the cervical spine in a way that flattens its natural curve and pulls the head forward. With digital posture analysis I can measure exactly how far, then use specific adjustments, mirror-image traction, and Denneroll spine-remodeling to work that curve back toward normal — and re-measure to prove the change. More on the posture correction and neck pain & headaches pages.

Do you treat sciatica and pinched nerves?

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: sciatica is usually a nerve being irritated or compressed somewhere along its path, and the first job is to find where and why. I examine the lumbar spine and pelvis, identify the source, and build a corrective plan around it rather than just numbing the symptom. See sciatica relief for details.

Do you treat auto-accident injuries and whiplash?

Short answer: yes, and this is handled differently from regular visits. Longer answer: auto-accident and whiplash injuries need careful documentation from day one, so these cases bill through your insurance or attorney rather than the $39 special. The sooner you’re examined after a collision, the better — for both your recovery and your claim. See auto accident & whiplash, then call (805) 496-4469 so we document everything correctly.

Can you help my child's posture?

Short answer: yes — pediatric posture is something I evaluate carefully and treat gently. Longer answer: heavy backpacks, screens, and growth spurts can pull a developing spine out of alignment, and catching it early matters. We use age-appropriate, low-force methods and measure posture objectively so we’re not guessing. See pediatric chiropractic and posture correction.

Do you offer chiropractic for scoliosis?

Short answer: yes — scoliosis management is a specific focus of structural chiropractic. Longer answer: we can’t promise to “cure” a scoliotic curve, but Chiropractic BioPhysics offers measured, research-backed protocols — specific traction, exercises, and adjustments — aimed at improving the curve and managing symptoms. We measure objectively and track change over time. See scoliosis management.

Is chiropractic safe?

Short answer: for the vast majority of people, yes — chiropractic care is widely regarded as safe and conservative for neuromusculoskeletal problems. Longer answer: serious complications are rare, and the most common side effect is temporary soreness, like after a workout. Safety comes from a proper exam first: we screen for the conditions where a forceful adjustment isn’t appropriate, and when those are present we use low-force methods or refer you out. We won’t adjust a spine we haven’t evaluated.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe during pregnancy?

Short answer: yes — with pregnancy-appropriate technique and positioning. Longer answer: many expecting mothers see a chiropractor for the low-back and pelvic strain that comes with a shifting center of gravity. We use gentle, adapted methods and equipment designed to keep mom comfortable. If your pregnancy is high-risk, I’ll coordinate with your OB. See prenatal chiropractic.

Is chiropractic care safe for children?

Short answer: yes, when it’s age-appropriate and gentle. Longer answer: adjusting a child is nothing like adjusting an adult — the force is a fraction of what you’d picture, and the exam comes first, always. We keep it light, low-force, and tailored to a growing body. See pediatric chiropractic.

What conditions can't a chiropractor treat?

Short answer: chiropractic is for neuromusculoskeletal problems — the spine, joints, muscles, nerves, and posture. Longer answer: we won’t pretend conservative care fixes everything. If we see something that needs a medical specialist, we’ll tell you and refer you. Staying inside our scope is part of practicing honestly.

What are the side effects of a chiropractic adjustment?

Short answer: the most common is mild, temporary soreness — much like the day after a new workout. Longer answer: some people feel that for a day or so as the body adapts; many feel immediate relief instead. We’ll tell you what to expect for your specific plan, and if anything feels off between visits, call the office and we’ll talk it through.
